Many of you, who love makeup especially, must know how much effort needed to create a look, even the simplest one. Therefore, we need something that can seal them all and make it last through the day.
Some of you may have heard a product called Setting Spray. However, not all Facial Spray can be used as Setting Spray. Read on to find out the difference & my recommendation!
Important notes: The following review is tested on oily skin under Indonesia’s very hot and very humid tropic weather.
Facial Mist VS Setting Spray
Just like everyone else, I was also confused and mistakenly taking facial spray as setting spray. However, there is a huge difference between Facial Mist & Setting Spray. Therefore, not all facial spray can be used as Setting Spray. Here is the difference:
It is a facial spray that mainly designed to keep our face fresh and hydrated. In short, facial mist helps to seal in the hydration by locking the water on the upper layers of the epidermis and prevent evaporation. Therefore, I personally find it useful to improve the condition of the skin when it’s exceptionally dry. However, you have to do it rightly, or else, it may turn drying up the skin instead.
The following is my preference on how to apply:
- On bare face:
- Spray the mist
- Rub your hands until it’s warm
- Pat gently on the face
- Before applying moisturizer:
- Spray the mist
- Apply the cream or oil moisturizer as usual
- On thick cream:
- Apply the mist a little and mix in with the cream to dilute it
- Apply the diluted cream
- As facial mask:
- Sprays facial mist on cotton pads generously
- Spread the wet cotton pads on cleansed face
- Leave it for about 10-15 minutes
- No rinsing needed
Last but not least, facial mist also functions to help soothing the irritated skin as facial mist contains anti-inflammatory properties. It is due to the used of spring water. In short, spring water functions as natural healer for burned, irritated and delicate skin.
There are many brands available out there, such as The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist, Laneige Water Bank Mineral Skin Mist, Laneige Brightening Sparkling Water Capsule Mist, & Evian Brumisateur Facial Spray (Click here for review), which is my current favorite.
In contrast with Facial Mist, which is normally thermal water (sourced from spring deep underground), setting spray is a cosmetic product designed to preserved applied makeup for several hours. It is like hairspray for your face (I think this is the easiest way to explain it).
Since it’s the “hairspray” for the face, Setting Spray is applied at the very last step of your makeup routine. So, once you have done applying your makeup and happy with the result; then, you can spray the setting spray. It is because once you have sprayed the spray, it will be very hard to fix the look.
The best way to apply is by holding your makeup spray at arm’s length, and applies a few squirts. Do not rub it! Just let it dry normally.
Here I am gonna share with you 2 makeup setting spray that I have tried. One from high-end and one from drugstore brand.
Important notes: I tested these products under Indonesia’s everlasting hot and humid weather, and I have super oily skin!

NYX Matte Setting Spray
NYX is actually having two varieties of setting spray – Matte & Dewy. Since my skin is the very oily type, I opted for the Matte. If you have dry to very dry skin, or you live in a wintery weather, you may want to get the dewy one instead. So, let’s get to the topic.

The Price & The Store
As for the store, you can always get them both online – Sephora, and offline at NYX and MUFE official retail stores or at big malls’ beauty counters at SOGO/Sephora/Aeon Mall BSD/Centro, dst.
