Lately, I have been taking an interest in Haiku for its quiet beauty. There is something about it that feels like discovering a hidden treasure.
I first discovered Haiku while browsing in an online bookstore, looking for a new book to read. As I flipped through the sample pages, I became curious about this small and simple form of poetry. Since then, I found myself increasingly interested in it
Why Haiku?
Unlike many other forms of poetry, Haiku feels approachable even for someone like me, who does not consider themselves a poet. It’s short and simple, yet it can capture the beauty of moments of daily life and small experiences in a very natural way.
In just a few lines, a haiku gently captures moments, emotions, and reflections of everyday life. As the following quote explains it:
“A haiku is created from two ingredients: an experience and an expression of that experience in words after it has passed through the poet’s heart.” — Lee Gurga, Haiku: A Poet’s Guide
What’s Haiku?
For those who are new to Haiku, it’s a very short form of poetry that originated in Japan. It’s known for its simplicity and its ability to capture small moments of life, nature, or human experience.
Basic Characteristics of Haiku
As explained in the introduction to Haiku by The Haiku Foundation, Haiku is written in Three Lines. Traditionally, it follows a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables
The content of a haiku usually captures a small moment from nature or everyday life, and expresses it in simple language, focusing on observation rather than explanation.
Christian Haiku
The simplicity of Haiku intrigued me and made me wonder if it could become a way to express my personal reflection of faith and prayer. As I looked around, I discovered that Christian Haiku are still quite rare. Perhaps this scarcity is not only a challenge, but also an opportunity to explore and create.
If you happen to know any Christian Haiku or have written one yourself, I would be glad to hear about it. And if these small reflections resonate with you, you are warmly welcome to follow along as this quiet exploration continues.
Perhaps, along the way, we will discover together how a few simple lines can hold moments of faith, gratitude, and quite encouters with God in everyday life.
Love,
Blossomshine
